Ballet is getting a luminous makeover in Calgary. Ballet of Lights pairs classical choreography with glowing fibre-optic costumes, transforming familiar movements into something far more visual. As dancers move through the darkness, every turn, leap and carefully held pose is picked out in light, creating a striking new way to experience some of ballet’s best-known stories.
Over the course of around 60 minutes, the performance moves through short scenes inspired by The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. There’s no need to know the original productions or follow a complex plot—the focus is on movement, music and the changing spectacle on stage. It’s a contemporary introduction to ballet that makes the art form feel accessible without losing the precision at its centre.

Ballet of Lights in Calgary: What’s on?

Sleeping Beauty
Few ballet images are as familiar as Aurora suspended inside a fate set in motion before her life can properly begin. In this condensed moment, the curse and its effect are what stay in view: stillness settling over the stage, tension held in controlled movement, and order paused as if an entire court has been caught mid-breath. The reference to The Sleeping Beauty, known through Charles Perrault and later through Tchaikovsky’s 1890 ballet, lands quickly here, with illuminated costumes and precise lines keeping the shift from suspension to release clear to follow.
